Hey guys,

barring me joining a forum for this one question, I thought I would ask you. I am rebuilding my quadrajet (a remanufactured unit) off a 1979 trans am, so it is one of the late model bodies. The choke was the only part not working when I took it off, which complicates this problem:

Kinja'd!!!

this little cam on the choke that prevents the secondary from opening seems to be just dangling there. the lever on the choke does push against the top, and actuate it, but there seems to be no return spring or anything to prevent it from being loose when not actuated by the choke. Am I missing a piece? does this need the linkage from the rear vaccum stop? am I worrying about nothing?

Thanks guys. will post some before/afters at a later time.

My carb is the same way I think. When your carb is properly oriented and warmed up (choke open) gravity should pull the cam thing out of the way. The whole assembly isn’t really necessary but it saves fuel and saves your engine if you floor it while it is cold. http://oppositelock.kinja.com/done-153970786… Check out these photos of my carb, maybe it will help.

I’ve pulled those off in the past. It shouldn’t do any harm as long as the choke is adjusted properly though.

He could also stop by a dealer and get a picture of the parts diagram GM3-17 . To check on any parts if needed because of wear the carb serial number will be usually on a verticle surface and be something like #17059XXX . If its an original 1979 carb that fifth digit will be a “9" . If from another year number other than “9" , the entire carb number will be needed to see what year, make and model this really came from. We used to see them swapped all the time and there are minor variations between some years.
